VOLUNTEER WORK in the community by our members helps the community. It also builds respect for the union, raises our profile and even generates organizing leads.
The motto of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers: "Service to the Community and Justice on the Job"
One example of our members engaging with volunteer work is District 160's annual Run for the Dogs, a motorcycle poker run held each July with proceeds benefitting Guide Dogs of America. Last year, we raised approximately $25,000 to help train guide dogs to assist blind and visually impaired men and women in the US and Canada.
IAM District 160 is currently assessing member interest in this and other volunteer committee work. Committees could be based in Ferndale, Seattle, Tacoma, Bremerton, Anchorage, or in multiple locations working together in a coordinated (or even competitive) spirit.
In addition to working with the Run for the Dogs, other ideas for volunteer committee involvement include:
Union Organizing Machinists Non-partisan Political League Political and Legislative Work Community Service (i.e., food bank or homeless shelter) Adopt-a-Highway Clean-up Human Rights Retiree Assistance History Preservation
In addition, many state and county agencies offer volunteer opportunities (including Fish and Wildlife, Parks, and Search and Rescue) that union members might join together to engage in. Opportunities are only limited by our imagination.
Please take a few minutes to complete and send the form below if you have an interest in volunteering for work to strenghten your unionin the community!
